On 10 December 2025, Australia will introduce new rules requiring social media platforms to stop children under 16 from creating or maintaining accounts. This is one of the biggest shifts in digital regulation our country has seen, and it will directly affect families.
At Screen Sanity, we know raising kids in a digital world is complex. Our goal is to give you clear information and practical steps, so you can lead your family with confidence.
What exactly is changing?
From 10 December, major social media companies such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook must take reasonable steps to block under-16s from using their platforms.
This includes:
- Preventing new under-16 accounts from being created
- Identifying and deactivating existing accounts belonging to under-16s
- Providing ways to verify age and appeal if an account is wrongly removed
Why has this law been introduced?
The government says the change is about protecting children from risks such as harmful content, online predators, cyberbullying and addictive algorithms. Research has linked heavy social media use with increased rates of anxiety, poor sleep and body image concerns in teens.
Supporters believe this step will give children more time to enjoy real-world experiences before navigating the pressures of social media. Critics warn that implementation will be challenging, and some young people may turn to less regulated online spaces.
What this law does not do
- It does not criminalise children for using social media
- It does not prevent under-16s from viewing content without an account
- It does not apply to all digital tools — messaging apps, games and education platforms may not be included
How parents can prepare
1. Take stock now
Talk with your child about what apps they currently use. List their accounts and discuss how the changes might affect them.
2. Start the conversation
Explain the new rules in age-appropriate language. Ask your child how they feel about it. Listen first, then share your concerns and hopes.
3. Stay alert to platform updates
In the coming months, expect new age-verification tools. Keep an eye on official announcements from the apps your child uses.
4. Plan alternatives
If your child uses social media to connect with friends, help them find other ways. This might include messaging apps, phone calls, or safe community spaces.
5. Build resilience
Regulation is only one piece of the puzzle. Teach your child about healthy device use, screen-free times, and how to handle tricky online situations. Encourage hobbies, sports and creative outlets that don’t depend on a screen.
6. Lean on your community
These changes may feel disruptive at first. Remember you are not alone. Other families are walking through the same challenges. Reach out, share ideas, and encourage one another.
